The Metadata Audit: Why Your Music is 'Invisible' to Royalty Systems
In the digital era, music is more than just audio—it's data.
If that data is broken, inconsistent, or missing, your music essentially becomes invisible to the systems that collect and pay out royalties. This is the #1 reason independent artists fail to collect 100% of their earnings.
Welcome to the Metadata Audit.
What is Music Metadata?
Metadata is the digital DNA of your song. It includes everything from the song title and artist name to the highly technical codes like ISRC and ISWC.
When Spotify streams your song, they look at this data to know who to pay. If they find an ISRC (Recording Code) but can't find a matching ISWC (Composition Code), the publishing half of your royalties simply goes into a "black box" where it sits until it expires.
The 3 Pillars of a Clean Audit
1. The ISRC vs. ISWC Link
The most common point of failure is a "break" between the recording and the song itself.
- ISRC (International Standard Recording Code): Identifies the recording (Master). Issued by your distributor.
- ISWC (International Standard Musical Work Code): Identifies the composition (Lyrics/Melody). Issued by your PRO (ASCAP/BMI).
The Audit Step: Log into your PRO account. Does every song have an ISWC? Now log into your Distributor. Does it show that same ISWC for the recording? If not, the system doesn't know they are the same song.
2. Credit Consistency
Royalty systems are literal. If a collaborator is registered as "John A. Smith" at ASCAP but your distributor has them listed as "Johnny Smith," the computer may fail to match the credit, leading to a "frozen" payment.
The Audit Step: Ensure the legal name and IPI/CAE number for every writer matches exactly across all platforms. This is where a formal Split Sheet becomes your best friend.
3. Role Specification
Are you listing your producer as a "Writer" or just a "Performer"? In the eyes of publishing, if they aren't listed as a Writer/Composer, they don't get a share of the Performance or Mechanical royalties.
The Audit Step: Review your registrations at The MLC and SoundExchange. Ensure roles are defined correctly according to your agreements.
How SplitChord Fixes This
The best way to pass a metadata audit is to never fail one in the first place.
SplitChord serves as your Metadata Source of Truth. By locking in your splits and creator details before distribution, you generate a digital document that you can use to copy-paste the exact same data into every agency.
- No Spelling Errors: Everyone enters their own legal info.
- IPI Verification: Store collaborator IPI numbers in one place.
- Proof of Content: Use the signed PDF as legal proof if a distributor or PRO questions your data.
Your Audit Checklist
- Download all your current split sheets (or create them in SplitChord).
- Verify that every ISRC on your dashboard has a corresponding ISWC at your PRO.
- Check The MLC to ensure your "Mechanical" shares match your signed split sheets.
- Confirm your performer registration at SoundExchange.
